Launch Event - Lawful by Design
Event description
Article 36 Legal invites you to an online webinar on 12 June 2025 from 9 am CET / 5 pm AEST to launch the 'Lawful by Design' initiative.
The Lawful by Design initiative encourages national compliance with International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in the design and development of new weapons by:
Encouraging defence industry to voluntarily commit to considering how IHL impacts the design, development, and use of new technology weapons and mitigating legal risks associated with the design, development, and deployment of new technology weapons; and
Encouraging States to incorporate IHL requirements in their acquisition processes by including legal review requirements within tender documentation (i.e. requiring defence industry to demonstrate their product’s ability to be used in compliance with IHL).
The launch event, hosted by Dr Damian Copeland, will include a panel discussion by senior representatives from Academia, Defence Industry, Government and Non-Government Organisations.
Article 36 Legal specialises in the Article 36 legal review of new weapons, means and methods of warfare, including autonomous weapon systems.
